Activity Restriction Among Patients at the Geriatric Clinic

B AC K G R O U N D: The aim of this descriptive study was to define the activity restrictions among a selected group of elderly people. M ET H O D S: A standardized questionnaire was prepared using the Groningen Activity Restriction Scale and applied to the participants of the study with the face to face interview technique. Individuals over the age of 65 that were admitted to the Geriatrics Department at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy during the data collection period formed the study group (n=250), 64.4% of which were female and 35.6% male. R E S U LT S: The mean age was 71.6±5.8 years, ranging from 65 to 92 years. Those having one or more chronic condition constituted 95.6% of the group. The most difficult activity to perform was reported as “doing heavy cleaning” by both genders. The easiest was “washing face/hands” among women and “feeding yourself” among men. About 53% of the study group reported that they could independently carry out the activities “standing up from chair” and “doing shopping”. CO N C L U S I O N S: For elderly individuals everywhere, independence in performing daily activities is very important. In this paper, the importance of dependency and the burden it poses have been emphasized.
